India’s best-selling book is now a million-seller in the US
The Indian Express has published its best-seller list for 2017, revealing that ‘Karma’ by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has sold a million copies in the United States and a whopping 9.7 million in India.
The bestseller in US was ‘Rakshasa’, with an estimated 7.5 million copies sold.
‘Rathna’ by Amitabh Bachchan was the top seller in India, with an average of 8.6 million copies.
In both countries, Aishwal Jain ‘Sarvodaya’ has the highest average sales.
Aishwal is the author of several acclaimed novels including ‘Sardar Pashupati’ (2013) and ‘Namaksha’ (2016).
He is also the author or co-author of the six-time Baahubali films and has written and directed films like ‘Tum Bhi Baahay Hai’ and ‘Krishna Gaon Hai’.
In 2017, Jain released ‘Saranam’ with Bollywood superstar Salman Khan.
‘Karma’, by Aisha Rai Bachchans ‘Darshan’ (2017) and the upcoming ‘Sri Ramakrishna’, by the ‘Bachchhan brothers’, have also made their way into US cinemas.
Rai Bachchan, who has been writing in English for almost 30 years, has also published books in English and Hindi in recent years.
In the US, the author’s latest novel, ‘Arundhati Bhattacharya’ (2018), is already being hailed as the best-sellers of the year, with its average sales estimated at around 6.2 million copies and 9.8 million sales.
In India, the bestseller for 2017 was ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ by Ramya Bose.
The bestseller on the Indian market is ‘Rita Banerjee’s Kumbha Mela’ (2009), which is the only film on the list to have earned a US CinemaScore nomination.
The Indian films of the past year, including the ‘Vadodara’ remake and ‘Babu’s Boys’, have seen strong sales in the States.
On the other hand, the top three best-sold films in India this year were ‘Sakshi Laxman’ by Kishore Kumar, ‘Nirguna’ by Rishi Kapoor and ‘Santu’ by Sacha Bandyopadhyay.
Kashmiri novelist and film-maker Manu Naik’s novel ‘Rajputana’ is now the best selling novel in India and in the UK.
India’s ‘Rishikesh’ is also a blockbuster hit in the film market, selling almost 10 million copies as of September.
This year, the bestselling novel by Indian novelist Sudhakar Menon, ‘Vijay Bhaskar’, has also been released in the country.
